A night of joy turned into sorrow as a deadly stampede struck Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium after RCB’s IPL 2025 win. Read the emotional story, facts, and reactions here.

Bengaluru Stampede Tragedy – A Night of Celebration Turns Deadly
The streets of Bengaluru were glowing with joy on June 2, 2025. RCB fans were dancing, laughing, and waving red flags high in the air. The Royal Challengers Bangalore had finally broken their curse. After years of heartbreak, they were IPL champions.
But the celebrations at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium ended in tragedy. What should have been a night of dreams became a night of despair.
A deadly stampede broke out, killing at least 23 people and injuring over 60.
How It All Began
After the final win against PBKS, RCB announced a victory parade and fan celebration at their home ground. Social media exploded. Every fan in the city wanted to be there.
People began lining up near the stadium six hours before the gates opened. As time passed, the crowd grew into thousands.
By 6 PM, nearly 70,000 fans surrounded the stadium – even though the venue can only safely hold around 40,000 people.
Chaos at the Gate
Multiple entry gates were shut due to “VIP movements,” and frustration built. Suddenly, a gate was opened near Stand C.
Fans surged forward. There was no queue, no barricade, no control. The stampede began within seconds.
Children, women, and elderly people were caught in the middle. Shoes, phones, and banners were left scattered on the ground as people ran for their lives.
Who Were the Victims?
Among the deceased were:
- A 17-year-old student named Ritika, who had just cleared her board exams.
- A man in his 50s, who had come with his grandson to relive his youth.
- A newlywed couple, both hardcore RCB fans, who were celebrating their honeymoon in Bengaluru.
Families now mourn the loss of their loved ones – lives lost over a game they loved.
Emotional Reactions from All Over
The nation was shocked. Prime Minister Modi called it a “national tragedy.”
Rishi Sunak, the UK Prime Minister, shared his sorrow and tweeted:
“Today we mourn. The world stands with Bengaluru.”
RCB captain Virat Kohli said with teary eyes,
“This victory means nothing if our fans are not safe.”
Where Did It All Go Wrong?
Eyewitnesses say there were no proper crowd control measures. Police were understaffed.
No ambulances were stationed nearby despite expecting massive crowds.
One vendor near the gate said,
“I shouted to the guards when I saw people falling, but they just watched.”
The event had no proper registration or ticket system. It was open to all. The mismanagement was evident.
Government’s Promise of Justice
The Karnataka government has announced a judicial inquiry into the incident.
A compensation of ₹10 lakh per deceased and ₹2 lakh per injured has been declared. But no amount can bring back those lives.
Bengaluru in Grief
On June 3, the city observed a silent candlelight vigil outside the stadium.
Fans wore black RCB jerseys. They held hands and chanted, “We won the match, but lost our people.”
The Bigger Picture
This tragedy shows us that celebrations need structure. Emotions must be balanced with safety.
India has seen such incidents before – during religious festivals, political rallies, and now, sports celebrations. It’s time we learn from every loss.

We love cricket. We love RCB. But no trophy is worth losing lives.
Let this be a wake-up call for event organisers, security officials, and authorities across India. Celebrate with care. Plan with purpose. And always put human life first.
🙏 May the souls of those who lost their lives rest in peace. Bengaluru will never forget.
