In response to the United States’ announcement of reciprocal tariffs set to commence on April 2, 2025, the Indian government has adopted a cautious and proactive approach to mitigate potential trade tensions and strengthen bilateral relations.

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the U.S. in February 2025, both nations agreed to negotiate a comprehensive Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). The objective of this agreement is to enhance two-way trade in goods and services, increase market access, reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers, and deepen supply chain integration.
